Hey everyone,

May all of you have a Blessed Eid Day, and may all your fasting, prayers and good actions be accepted!

If your Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Humanist, Atheist or anyone else. I hope you have a pleasant day. A joyous occasion should be shared by all! :glomp:

May we all attain happiness and guidance in this life and the success in the next!

What is 'Eid?

In the effort of bridging gaps of misunderstanding, please accept this explanation from me as a gesture to create better understanding. I hope you benefit from this little anecdote!

There are two Eid or large celebrations that happen throughout the Muslim lunar calander, 'Eid ul Fitr and 'Eid ul Adha. 'Eid ul Fitr is the celebration that happens on the 1st day after the month of fasting, Ramadan, is completed. 'Eid is said to be a gift or present from God that is for those who fasted, people aren't allowed to fast this day and the community is assembled for the Eid prayer. Ramadan was the month that the Quran was sent down, and also we have a tradition that all the original books sent with prophets were sent down in this month as well throughout history.

Everyone is encouraged to buy a fresh set of clothing and donate a measure of grain, or in this day and age money that can be used for the feeding of the poor so that they too can have an Eid feast. It is said that that amount purifies your fasting from all the minor mistakes that took place throughout the month.

The celebration is for not only hopefully completing the month of fasting successfully, but also rejoicing in the hopes of God's mercy for those how strived. His mercy is shown by way of the forgiving of sins and mistakes, and granting of many bounties both in this life and the next.

After the Eid prayer everyone gets up and goes around and hugs one another or shakes hands and says Eid Mubarak or Blessed Eid (to you)! This strengthens the community bond and encourages social behaviour. Of course men and women are separate so no mischief can happen and the dignity of people is preserved from rumour mongers.

After this point we go to our homes and get ready either to host or visit our friends and relatives. We also pay our Zakat (2.5% obligatory charity on our wealth that exceeds our mean and has been in our possession for a year) near the end of the month of Ramadan as it is charged with blessings and encouraged to do so.

We are told that if you have missed a fast, you have till next Ramadan to make it up, also if you want to get the reward of fasting for an entire year, merely fast another 6 days within this month (of course after you make up your missed fasts). These 6 extra optional fasts don't even have to be in a row either, simply any time during this month after Ramadan.

Ramadan Mubarak IV by Teakster
Ramadan Mubarak IV
This is the Arabic word for Ramadan.

Ramadan is a Muslim religious observance that takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, believed to be the month in which the Qur'an was revealed to Angel Gabriel, who later revealed it to the Prophet Muhammad.

It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims do not eat or drink anything from dawn until sunset. Fasting is meant to teach the person patience and humility. Ramadan is a time to fast for the sake of God, and to offer even more prayer than usual. In Ramadan Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance into the future, ask for help in refrain from everyday evils and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds.

I will try to give out more freebies during this festive month!

However....I know some of my watchers are wondering what Ramadan is, so I going to explain it to them.

Don't worry, I'm not going to brainwash you all. I know many people aren't religious but this is my belief and I don't ask you to believe the same, but I believe it is important to understand the different cultures and beliefs of other people.

Ignorance will only lead to more ignorance. It's not until we learn from each that we can understand each other. As it is normal for humans to fear things from a lack of understanding.

So this will be a quick explanation for those who have never heard of it.

Ramadan is the month in which all the eligible Muslims are encouraged to fast from food, drink, abusive language and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured.

Eligible means men and women who are over the age of about 7, are not sick, or travelling, or in women's instance have their menstrual cycle or in some cases breast feeding.

Fasting is meant to teach the Muslim patience, modesty and spirituality. We try to purify ourselves through self-restraint and good deeds.

Among the other benefits is that we can understand the hardships of poor people, we shed extra weight, and clean out the system of pollutants.

One thing I really like about Ramadan is the entire atmosphere around it.  It's a time of solidarity and sharing food, especially when we break our fasts. We visit each other more often and go to the mosque to pray for many hours.

We are told that fasting is the highest form of worship since only God really knows if you are being true to it or not. You can fool other people or cheat, but then you are only starving yourself. It's only if you're honest and really try, you reap tremendous rewards. When you see different kinds of people, from different backgrounds, races, ages, and all of them fasting worldwide, you can't help but feel a brotherhood. Since we are all doing it together.

So to one and all I wish you a Blessed Ramadan, and even encourage non Muslims to try fasting and see how it's like, its a great was to break addictions and bad habits.

Well…thank you for reading this and I hope that has been useful.
